Who “Owns” Jewish History? Archives and the Control of Jewish Culture

Hosted By: The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University

What does it mean to hold history in your hands? And who can truly “own” it? Join Dr. Jason Lustig as he explores how archives in Germany, the United States, and Israel became battlegrounds over the control of Jewish culture from the turn of the twentieth century to our own digital era, especially in light of Nazi-era looting and postwar restitution. Both before the Holocaust and especially in its aftermath, Jewish leaders around the world felt a shared imperative to muster the forces and resources of Jewish life. Lustig will show how archives are just as much about the future as they are about the past.
