The Greatest Medieval Masoretic Pentateuch: The Lailashi Codex—the Crown of Georgian Jewry
Hosted By: Oxford Interfaith Forum
The Lailashi Codex, a nearly complete Masoretic Pentateuch and a prime example of the vavei ha‘amudim scribal tradition, is noted for its elaborate micrographic designs and calligrams. Dr. Thea Gomelauri’s book “The Lailashi Codex: The Crown of Georgian Jewry,” published in October 2023, introduced this ancient codex to the Western world for the first time. Dr. Gomelauri, along with three distinguished scholars in Semitic Languages, Illuminated Jewish Art, and Hebrew Manuscripts, will discuss the codex’s rich history, its content, and its significance to Biblical scholarship and Jewish Studies.
