Taking Yiddish Science Global: YIVO’s Foreign Branches, 1925-1994
Hosted By: YIVO
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a lecture on the international reach of YIVO from its early years through the postwar era. Inspired by diaspora nationalism and Yiddishism, YIVO’s foreign sections emerged across North and South America, South Africa, Australia, China, and beyond, using surveys, autobiography competitions, and exhibitions to document immigration and sustain Yiddish scholarship. During and after the Holocaust, these branches—often supported by refugees—mounted some of the first exhibitions commemorating Holocaust victims and worked toward the reconstruction of Yiddish culture, offering new perspectives on 20th-century Jewish history.
