Sovereignty, Violence and Morality: Zionism and the Ethics of Judaism
Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")
This four-part seminar examines the interaction between religion and sovereignty in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader Zionist movement. It explores how religion and state coexist, questioning whether their union must invariably lead to negative outcomes or if religious values can moderate nationalist extremism. The seminar will analyze diverse perspectives, from the anti-Zionist Rabbi of Satmar to the ideology of Vladimir Jabotinsky, and from the messianic views of the Rabbis Kook and settler rabbis of Gush Emunim to the humanistic approaches of Ahad Ha’am and founders of religious Zionism, assessing their impact on contemporary Israeli politics and the discourse on power.
