Sovereignty, Violence and Morality: Zionism and the Ethics of Judaism (Part 4/4 The Zionism of Values of Ahad Ha’am and Classic Religious Zionism)

Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")

The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has reignited discussions about the Jewish right to establish a state in the Land of Israel, emphasizing the dynamics of sovereignty and the core political aspects of Zionism. Rabbi Seidler-Feller will lead a four-part seminar exploring the interaction between religion and sovereignty and its influence on nationalist impulses, questioning whether the blend of religion and state can be constructive or inherently problematic, and examining the role of religious values in tempering nationalist fervor. The seminar will analyze a range of perspectives, from the anti-Zionist views of the Satmar Rabbi to the ideology of Vladimir Jabotinsky and the messianic urges of the Rabbis Kook, as well as the pacifist and humanistic approaches within Zionism, assessing their impact on Israeli politics and the moderation of power.
