Sovereignty, Violence, and Morality: Zionism and the Ethics of Judaism

Hosted By: Valley Beit Midrash

The current conflict and discussions around the Jewish right to statehood in the Land of Israel have prompted a renewed examination of the dynamics of sovereignty and its implications within political Zionism. This seminar will explore how religion interacts with sovereignty and the nationalist impulses it nurtures, addressing whether the integration of religion and state can be constructive or inherently results in toxicity and oppression. Through a study of diverse viewpoints, from the anti-Zionist Rabbi of Satmar to the messianic Rabbis Kook and settler rabbis of Gush Emunim, as well as pacifist thoughts, the seminar will delve into their influence on Israeli politics, the rise of extremism, and the voices advocating for restraint and limited power.
