Shakespeare and Talmudic Thought

Hosted By: London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS)

Did Shakespeare live in “Talmudic times”? An exploration of the expression of Jewish discourse into Shakespeare’s canon

What’s in a name? Hath not a Jew eyes? Heaven and earth, must I remember? To be or not to be? The rhetorical texture of Shakespeare’s work is best understood in its 16th-century context when religious debates saturated the cultural consciousness and spurred creativity.

The bard borrowed and adapted widely from a range of texts, including Talmudic wit and wisdom, and by following the expression of Jewish discourse into Shakespeare’s canon, see how rabbinic tradition informed some of the most profound questions that have driven intellectual enquiry for over 400 years.
