Music Among the Crypto-Jews of Portugal
Hosted By: Qesher

After the expulsion of Jews from Portugal, some stayed as Crypto-Jews. The early 20th century saw the “discovery” of the Jews of Belmonte and the northeast region of Tras-os-Montes, who had lived in isolation with few cultural contacts with the outside world.
Dr. Judith Cohen will introduce the people she interviewed, and explain how songs and recited prayers work in both the religious and secular contexts. Then we will move to the internet and social media age and their folklorization, always, with an emphasis on people and where and how they live.
This talk is live and interactive, the number of participants is limited. With your contribution to Qesher you will also be donating to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS), an organization with a 20-year history of providing services to Native Canadian Residential School Survivors, their families, and to those dealing with inter-generational traumas. .
