Meir Shalev z”l: Magical Storytelling At Its Best

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

This past April we lost one of Israel’s most prolific and impactful storytellers: Meir Shalev. His fantastic, magical writing captured the attention and love of readers in Israel and around the world. Shalev played imagination against reality and fiction against facts, visiting deserts and villages, featuring snakes, bears and pigeons, writing with a Marquez-like flair and a Chagall-like style. Shalev brought stories and histories together, peppering them with biblical imagery and an impressive knowledge of plants and wildlife.

As Israeli President Isaac Herzog said at Shalev’s funeral, “Shalev made us love the Hebrew language, the Hebrew Bible, and, of course, ourselves, the people of Israel.” Join Israeli literature expert, Aviva Laskov, for this special, one-time, one-hour exploration of the works of this master storyteller.
