Jews and the American Labor Movement
Hosted By: The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University
The great waves of Jewish immigration around the turn of the 20th century had profound effects on the American labor movement and influenced the growth of social unionism and New Deal reformism. Keith Danish will survey the individuals and organizations involved in these historic movements and explain how Judaism itself inspired reforms in the secular world. The rise of immigrant Jews and their offspring from the shop floor to leadership in the “rag trade” as well as of unions in and beyond the traditional “Jewish trades” will take us up to the current era.
