Jewish Names Around the World

Hosted By: Qesher

What makes a family name Jewish? How did Jewish family names originate in different periods and places? Why did Jews in North America, Hungary, Israel, and elsewhere change their surnames, and why are new generations reclaiming them back? This session answers these and many more questions about Jewish first and last names. Participants will learn about patronymic (father-based) surnames, geographic names, and profession names. They will learn about traditions of naming babies after honorees and using biblical and local sources.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
