Intersections of Art, Conflict, and Memory: George Segal’s ‘The Sacrifice of Isaac’ with Sophia Berry
Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")
The sculpture “Sacrifice of Isaac” by American pop artist George Segal was first installed outside Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium in 1973, drawing on the biblical story as a tribute to his father and his own connections to the narrative. The sculpture gained additional political and social significance following the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War just five months after its installation, with Israeli sculptor Menashe Kadishman and his son modeling for Abraham and Isaac. In a session led by Sophia, the significance and contemporary relevance of Segal’s work, alongside Kadishman’s own interpretation located at Tel Aviv Art Museum’s “Hostages Square,” will be explored.
