‘If Not Zionism, Then Nothing’: Henrietta Szold and Zionism in Her Own Words

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Before Theodor Herzl published “Der Judenstaat,” Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah, was already emphasizing the importance of Zionism in Jewish thought, advocating for a connection to the homeland as essential to Jewish identity. This program will explore Szold’s unique perspective on Zionism through her writings, comparing her views with those of Herzl and her American contemporary, Louis Brandeis, and examining the impact of founding Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, on her Zionist aspirations. Francine Klagsbrun, author of “Henrietta Szold: Hadassah and the Zionist Dream,” will provide an in-depth look at Szold’s influential role in shaping modern Jewish thought.
