Greek Jewry: At the Crossroads of Civilizations

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher presents a program on the Jewish presence in Greece, which dates back to antiquity and represents the oldest Jewish community in the western hemisphere. Once the epicenter of Sephardi culture in Europe and home to the unique Greek-speaking Romaniote community, Greece’s Jewish population numbered around 80,000 before World War II. The Holocaust decimated this population, and today the community works to preserve its unique heritage.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
