Amidst The Sunflowers: A Journey of Jewish Ukrainian Relations, Research, And Resilience
Hosted By: Haberman Institute
Equipped with power bars and prayers, and truly undeterred by the anxiety of her family, friends and colleagues, Michelle Goldhaber embarked on an academic and personal pilgrimage to the land from which her ancestors fled. As a Harvard Divinity student, social worker, and American Jewish scholar, Michelle’s first trip to Ukraine in 2002 challenged her personally and changed her professional trajectory, leading her from peacemaking and research, to decades later rabbinical school.
Michelle lived in Lviv, Ukraine for 12 years, first on a Fulbright and then independently, researching Jewish-Ukrainian relations, and building partnerships between the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, and Hebrew College in Newton.
Michelle’s lifelong commitment to thoughtful studies through a lens of tremendous kindness, compassion, sympathy, and sanctity has guided her research into a history of contradictions and cruelty, and through this lens, she will offer us a new perspective on the complexities of Ukraine yesterday and today… and perhaps a glimpse of what the future could offer the Jewish Ukrainian legacy.
Join us as Michelle shares her story of Jewish-Ukrainian life, her personal and professional discoveries, along with the challenges she encountered and insights she uncovered.
