And yet, the text is virtually impenetrable, written in deliberately cryptic language intended to shield its secrets from the masses. For centuries, Kabbalah was studied only by small circles of devotees. A widely cited tradition cautioned against anyone under 40 even attempting to unlock its mysteries.
