Brooklyn, Jews, and the Great American Game

I’m not much of a “baseball guy.” Not to say I never have been. For a good portion of my life, baseball (along with basketball) was my favorite sport to follow. From my time as an Oakland A’s fan to my switching of allegiances to the Montreal Expos, baseball provided some wonderful memories for me.

It’s all gone now. With the Expos now the Nationals, it’s been tough to follow Major League Baseball, and the numerous steroid scandals and disparity between the “have” and “have not” teams have not helped the cause.

But when I see a cool video like this, made by Dan Sieradski at JTA, I can’t help but enjoy myself. July 7th was Jewish Heritage Night at the Keyspan Park in Coney Island, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. The video follows Sieradski as he visits the ballpark, interviews a bunch of Jews and historians and discovers the connection between Judaism, Brooklyn, and baseball.

It’s worth check out. Especially at the 3:25 mark, where this one kid steals the show with his hilarious sense of tolerance…

Also, make sure you check out the MJL article covering the history of Jews and baseball.
