The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language
Hosted By: YIVO
YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents the world premiere of The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language, a new chamber opera with music by Pulitzer Prize finalist Alex Weiser and libretto by Ben Kaplan. The opera tells the true story of Yiddish linguist Yudel Mark’s unfinished effort to create a comprehensive Yiddish dictionary, blending historical characters with mystical figures who embody the spirit of the language. Performed by an ensemble of five singers with chamber orchestra, the 50-minute production reflects on the ambition of Yiddish culture after the Holocaust and the power of language to shape identity and memory.
