The Jewish Value of Giving in the New Year

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Charitable giving, or “tzedakah”, is a central Jewish obligation. Starting in the Torah, we are taught the value of donating and sharing what we have with those in need. We also instill a culture of giving at specific moments: at weekly collections at Jewish preschool, when one has a bar/bat mitzvah, before we light Shabbat candles, and more. This course takes the value of tzedakah beyond the acculturated practice to ask some of the bigger questions. How do we decide where to give? What do we do when we know there are so many places that need our financial help? How do we view people who do unethical things but also are generous donors? Should our organizations accept tzedakah from them? There are more complexities and nuances to this ancient Jewish value than you might think! Join expert Melton teacher Rabbi Michele Faudem as we explore what it means to give tzedakah in 2024.
