Family on Trial: Law and Gender in the Cairo Geniza

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

When discussing the Jews of the pre-modern Islamic world, the Cairo Genizah is almost always at the forefront of the conversation. In this exciting, one-time program taught by Dr. Oded Zinger of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, discover what was found in the Cairo Genizah and, from there, explore what these documents teach us about the dynamics of communal justice in family disputes. Unravel the knot of gender, family and Jewish Law as revealed in some of these medieval texts. Don’t miss out on this exciting program celebrating the release of Melton’s updated course, Exploring a Forgotten World: A Social History of Medieval Jewry as Revealed in the Cairo Genizah.
