Drawing Us In: Jewish Art from Ancient Works Through the 20th Century

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

Jewish art has a long and storied history. How long has Jewish art existed? What styles and themes have influenced Jewish artists throughout the centuries? How do we distinguish “Jewish art”? These questions and many more will be explored in this captivating two-part class presented by art history expert Dr. Sara Aroeste. Part one will cover Jewish art history, beginning with ancient works and taking us through 18th century Jewish artists and the themes of their works. Part two will cover art from the 20th century, focusing on the avant-garde Jewish artists, and the ways in which society both accepted and rejected their works. Join us for this unique adventure as we journey through the kaleidoscope of Jewish art history.
