Women Cantors: Finding Their Voice

Hosted By: Jewish Study Center

The Jewish Study Center presents a two-part program marking the 50th anniversary of Cantor Barbara Ostfeld’s ordination, the first woman to be institutionally ordained as a cantor. The first session with ethnomusicologist Dr. Rachel Adelstein will explore the history and music of women cantors, introducing early pioneers before Ostfeld and highlighting the impact of women’s voices on Jewish practice in the decades since. The second session features a conversation with two prominent members of the Women Cantors’ Network, reflecting on the legacy of women in the cantorate.
