Does Sushi Count as Jewish Food?

Everyone knows Jews like Chinese food , but I think we really need to add sushi to the list, too. Practically all of the kosher restaurants I frequent, no matter what their specialty, also have sushi. Pizza places have sushi. Falafel places have sushi. The new kosher waffle truck has Belgian waffles…and sushi!

Here’s my theory: Jews have been eating lox for a while, so when sushi caught on we were psyched to be able to get our waffle fix even when can’t get or don’t want a bagel. Either that, or we’re embarrassingly prone to falling for food trends.

In my experience, none of these places have particularly good sushi, which is hardly a shock. There’s a fancy new kosher sushi place on the Upper West Side, but they also serve steak. Call me a snob, but I really want to go to a sushi restaurant that only serves Japanese food. Is that really so much to ask??
