SUMMARY:The Origins\, Flowering\, and Documentary Afterlife of Yiddish Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a lecture by J. Hoberman on the history of Yiddish cinema\, born before World War I and operating on a shoestring to create a world that spoke directly to Ashkenazi Jewish audiences. The films belong to Polish\, Soviet\, and off-Hollywood American cinema but are best taken on their own terms. The lecture explores this unique episode in film history\, an international enterprise that created a national cinema without a nation-state.

SUMMARY:What Happens When We Ask the Kids? Lessons from Congregational Education
DESCRIPTION:The Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University presents a session with Dr. Esther S. Friedman on her study asking students themselves\, rather than parents or educators\, what young people need from congregational education. Their responses challenged many adult assumptions\, revealing that belonging\, meaningful relationships\, autonomy\, and opportunities to engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues often mattered more than the curricular priorities adults imagined. The Zoom session\, hosted by Professor Ziva Hassenfeld\, explores how listening more carefully to students can reshape congregational education and our broader understanding of teaching and learning.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event — Jewish Women at Home in the World: Gender\, Judaism\, and American Identity in the Rise of Mass Tourism
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scholar Program hosts historian and author Dr. Melissa R. Klapper for the launch of her new book\, “Jewish Women at Home in the World: Gender\, Judaism\, and American Identity in the Rise of Mass Tourism.” Between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries\, expanding opportunities for international travel enabled increasing numbers of American Jewish women to study abroad\, visit ancestral homes\, participate in international movements\, work overseas\, and embark on independent and organized tours. Drawing on diaries\, letters\, memoirs\, photographs\, and other archival sources\, Dr. Klapper illuminates how travel broadened these women’s horizons\, challenged traditional gender roles\, and strengthened Jewish identity.

SUMMARY:A Place in the Tradition: Queerness in Jewish Life
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning presents a three-part exploration with Rabbi Jamie Weisbach of queer Jewish life through Torah\, rabbinic texts\, halakhah\, and Jewish ethics. Sessions examine where queer stories and experiences already live within traditional Jewish texts\, how to approach Leviticus 18:22 and the challenge of halakhah when Jewish law and lived reality appear at odds\, and what Jewish interpersonal ethics ask of us in our relationships with queer family\, friends\, and community members. The course invites participants to encounter challenging texts honestly and consider how Torah can inform the communities we build together.
