Visibility Practices: Women Photographers of the Bauhaus
Hosted By: The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art
The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art presents a talk by Carla Maria Huttenloher bringing women’s photographic agency to the forefront of the Bauhaus story. The session explores how the independent, modern New Woman of the Weimar Republic converged with the experimental spirit of the New Vision, transforming photography into a medium for self-representation and active participation in modern life. The talk also examines how the political and avant-garde visibility of several of these women made their positions increasingly precarious after 1933, often resulting in exile, displacement, or the abrupt interruption of their careers.
