Virtual Walking Tour of Jewish Venice

Hosted By: Baltimore Zionist District

Join us for a Virtual Walking Tour of Jewish Venice. Our tour guide, Luisella Romeo, will be walking along the ancient Jewish ghetto in the Cannaregio, one of the most authentic Venetian areas in the city.

During this tour, we will explore the ancient ghettos, see where the gates would be, pass by the pawnshops, observe the five synagogues from the outside and learn the history up until modern times, in particular, during the tragic years of WW2 and the Shoah. You will also see the memorials of the 246 Venetian Jews that lost their lives in the concentration camps. Even if the ghetto is no longer a Jewish district, the memory is powerful and entirely present.

The relationship between Venice and the Jewish communities is fascinating. In Venice in 1516, the word “ghetto” was invented. In the three different ghettos of Venice, Jews from all over Europe would live together, supposedly separated from the rest of the city but strongly interrelated.
