Virtual Tour of Jewish St. Petersburg, Russia

Hosted By: Baltimore Zionist District

Join the BZD as we explore St. Petersburg with our tour guide, Evgenia (Jane) Kempinski. She’ll enlighten us about the city’s fascinating Jewish history, which spans three centuries and 342 bridges. Jews immigrated to the Imperial city after Russia annexed Eastern Poland in the late 18th century. Even though the Jews of St. Petersburg never experienced pogroms, their safety and culture were negatively affected by the restrictions of the Empire, the Bolsheviks, and the Soviets.

On our virtual tour, Jane will show us this magnificent city of cathedrals and palaces. She’ll link it’s Jewish history to its Russian history, shining a light on Jewish persecution and Jewish rebirth.

As a St. Petersburg native and Jew, Jane brings a valuable perspective to her Jewish tours. Her family immigrated to St Petersburg in the 1920s from the Pale of Settlement. Currently, Jane and her family live in Haifa after making Aliyah. We hope that you’ll join us on this exciting virtual tour and learn what it’s like to be a Jew living in Russia today.
