SUMMARY:The 'Redemptive' Antisemitism of the Nazi Period
DESCRIPTION:Community Scholar Program presents a lecture examining how Nazi antisemitism developed between 1933 and 1945 and why it differed from earlier forms of hatred. Drawing on Saul Friedländer’s concept of “redemptive antisemitism\,” the session explores how Nazi ideology portrayed Jews as a corrupting force whose removal was seen as national purification. The discussion also considers how such ideas took hold in German society and how they helped make the Holocaust imaginable.

SUMMARY:Sword of Abraham\, Shield of Davis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a landmark virtual series as we commemorate 250 years of the Jewish experience in America\, exploring the profound ways Jewish identity and the American story have shaped one another. Through a series of monthly conversations over the course of this year with the nation’s leading historians\, we will journey from the arrival of the first colonial settlers to the vibrant\, diverse communities of the modern era. \nOn April 16\, the series continues with Historian and Author Adam Mendelsohn.\n  \nWhat was it like to be a Jew in the armies of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis? Jewish soldiers were religious outsiders in military environments that made few allowances for their specific needs. They were often expected to subsist on diets heavy in pork and to worship on Sundays rather than Saturdays. Furthermore\, most of their Christian comrades had never encountered Jewish people before. \nThis talk will explore the visible and invisible ways that the everyday experiences of Jews were distinct from those of other soldiers who served during the Civil War. \n \nWe invite you to join us for this lecture with Adam Mendelsohn followed by Q&A with JTA’s editor-in-chief Philissa Cramer. \nThis is an online only event. After registering\, you will receive the Zoom link via email to join the discussion on April 16. The event will be recorded and sent out to all registrants 24-48 hours after the event. Please note that by registering you will also begin to receive a weekly events email from our 70 Faces Media brands. \nQuestions can be sent to events@70facesmedia.org. \nYou can register for the entire series here. The entire package of at least eight events costs only $54\, and you’ll have access to all prior event recordings. \nRegister for THIS event by clicking the Register button on this page.

SUMMARY:A Golden Era: Friendship\, Art and Wonderful Warsaw in the 1930's
DESCRIPTION:While writing her New York Times bestseller\, The Light of Days\, Judy Batalion became fascinated by the cosmopolitan society that shaped the brave Jewish women of the Polish resistance. In her debut novel\, The Last Woman of Warsaw\, she explores the vibrant world of inter-war Warsaw—a city known as the “Paris of the North\,” filled with theaters\, cabarets\, and a thriving cultural scene.\n\nThe story follows two Jewish women in Warsaw on the verge of war who become unlikely allies in their search for an individual they both care for: Fanny\, a daughter of the city’s elite who is too caught up in her longing for recognition as an artist to notice the signs that her life is about to crumble\, and Zosia\, a shtetl girl who has already felt the eruption of hate and has fled to the city to immerse herself in the budding youth movement.\n\nPlease join the New York Jewish Week and UJA-Federation of New York as we welcome you to the next event in our Folio literary series. Judy will be joined in conversation with Andrew Silow-Carroll\, Editor at Large\, 70 Faces Media.\n\nJudy Batalion is the author of several books of award-winning nonfiction\, most recently The Light of Days. Judy’s work has appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, Vogue\, the Forward\, Salon\, the Jerusalem Post\, and many other publications.
