The Community Scholar Program presents a series on South African artist William Kentridge, internationally acclaimed for his drawings, tapestries, sculptures, animations, and opera productions, exploring the often-overlooked Jewishness of his life and work. The son of Nelson Mandela’s lawyer, Kentridge brings together post-apartheid South Africa and Lithuanian Jewish memory, weaving themes from Jewish texts, ritual, and tradition into work that explores identity, history, and belonging. The series travels from Johannesburg to Lithuania to Rome and culminates with an online conversation with the artist himself.
