Ukraine: Four Years of War, Eighty Years of Memory

Hosted By: Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA)

On February 24, Ukraine will have been fighting off the Russian invasion for four years – longer than it had fought Hitler 80 years ago. Sami Rohr Prize-winning novelist and journalist Sasha Vasilyuk, who grew up in Ukraine, Russia and the US, will join Philissa Cramer, JTA editor in chief, to discuss how Putin’s propaganda weaponizes history, why personal memory work is key to democracy and the link between WWII and today.

Sasha Vasilyuk is a journalist and author of a debut novel, Your Presence Is Mandatory, winner of the California Book Award and the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature, also longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. It has been translated into seven languages. Her nonfiction has been published in the New York Times, CNN, Harper’s Bazaar, Time, USA Today, Telegraph, and elsewhere. Sasha grew up between Ukraine and Russia before immigrating to the U.S. at the age of 13. She earned a BA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and MA in Journalism from New York University.
