Tour of Jewish Dominican Republic

Hosted By: My Jewish Learning

Join My Jewish Learning for a virtual tour of the Dominican Republic’s Jewish community and history. Many Sephardic families from Jamaica, Curaçao, and other Caribbean islands migrated to the Dominican Republic throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily as merchants. The presentation will explore how these families maintained their identity through endogamous marriages despite the lack of educational institutions and will highlight the roles their descendants play today. The tour will offer an ethnographic view of how the Dominican Sephardim preserved their identity through rituals, superstition, and community organization.
