The Simchat Torah Flag From Biblical Roots to Modern Israeli Icon

Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")

The Community Scholar Program presents a lecture on the colorful and symbolic Simchat Torah flag, a tradition rooted in biblical and rabbinic imagery of the degel, or banner. Emerging in the late 19th century, the flag became a joyful emblem of continuity in Ashkenazi communities, later infused with Zionist and Israeli symbolism. Its evolving imagery—from Torah scrolls and the 12 Tribes to Herzl, Nordau, and the heroes of the Six Day War—reflects shifting Jewish ideals, with modern designs now expressing the diversity of Jewish life.
