The Rock and the Hard Place: Moses, Loss, and Leadership
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a one-hour class with Rabbi Marianne Novak exploring the emotional world surrounding one of the Torah’s most troubling moments, when Moses loses control in an act of disobedience that seems sudden, shocking, and devastating in its consequences. The session pays special attention to the recent death of Miriam — Moses’s sister, confidante, and lifelong companion — and considers how loss, frustration, exhaustion, and the relentless demands of leadership shape his actions in the wilderness. Together, participants will revisit this difficult story and uncover what it can teach us about anger, mourning, and the moments when even the greatest leaders reach a breaking point.
