The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a lecture by J. Hoberman on the history of Yiddish cinema, born before World War I and operating on a shoestring to create a world that spoke directly to Ashkenazi Jewish audiences. The films belong to Polish, Soviet, and off-Hollywood American cinema but are best taken on their own terms. The lecture explores this unique episode in film history, an international enterprise that created a national cinema without a nation-state.
