The Moroccan Jews of the Amazon Region

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher presents a talk on the history and legacy of Jewish life in the Amazon, focusing on Moroccan Jews who settled in the region from the nineteenth century onward. The session examines their migration from North Africa, their adaptation to life along the great rivers, and their preservation of Jewish identity across the Brazilian Amazon, including Manaus and Belém, as well as communities in the Peruvian Amazon. Drawing on historical records and personal research, the presentation reflects on themes of migration, resilience, and identity as a living legacy.

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
