SUMMARY:1492 — Columbus and the Jews: New World Discovery and Expulsion from Spain
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Study Center hosts a session on 1492\, the pivotal year of Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Americas and the expulsion of Jews from Spain\, examining the remarkable Jewish figures who made the expedition possible and even saved Columbus’s life. The presentation explores the complex world of Jews\, conversos\, and Marranos in late 15th-century Iberia and takes up questions such as whether Jews sailed aboard Columbus’s ships and whether Columbus himself was Jewish. From the Portuguese and Spanish courts to the first Jewish congregations in the Americas\, it traces how this moment transformed both Jewish and world history.

SUMMARY:Jewish Life Along the Silk Road: Samarkand\, Bukhara\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The Online Jewish Travel Club hosts a two-part journey into the Jewish communities of Central Asia’s ancient spice routes\, exploring how families in Bukhara kept their traditions alive under strict Islamic rule\, built wealthy trade dynasties\, and survived Soviet persecution before their mass exodus in the 1990s. Part one covers life on the Silk Road\, hidden courtyard mansions\, women’s traditions\, and secret home synagogues. Part two examines the rise of Jewish cotton tycoons\, underground kosher networks in the Soviet era\, and the emotional farewell to ancestral homes.

SUMMARY:Qesher Book Club: The Girl Who Rode the White Lion
DESCRIPTION:Qesher hosts a session on a novel that opens in Germany in 1938\, as young Sarah Frank escapes an SS officer and finds refuge in a traveling circus\, whose lion trainers\, acrobats\, and elephants become her family. The story then moves to New York City in 1957\, where a routine autopsy at the city zoo uncovers a silver SS ring engraved with a skull inside an elderly lion. For chief veterinarian Mark Spencer\, the discovery ignites a transatlantic search through postwar Paris\, Tel Aviv\, and New York toward the buried story of a girl who dared to challenge an unfathomable evil.

SUMMARY:The World of Sholem Aleichem
DESCRIPTION:5 Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. ET\nOct. 13 – Nov. 10 \nIf you’re a fan of “Fiddler on the Roof\,” you’ve experienced a taste of Sholem Aleichem’s Yiddish literary world: The 19th-century shtetls of Eastern Europe\, rendered in bright color\, full of hardship\, humor and love. \nThe writer\, born Salomon Rabinovich\, is one of history’s most beloved Yiddish writers\, a giant who helped the language get read around the world. (And yes\, his stories about Tevye the dairyman were the basis for “Fiddler.”) \nDive into the life\, writings and legacy of Sholem Aleichem in this engaging five-week online course from My Jewish Learning and Debra Caplan\, one of the top historians in the field. \n \nEach week\, we’ll read and discuss one short story — from the comic mishaps of Tevye to the sharp wit of his other shtetl tales\, exploring how Sholem Aleichem captured the joys\, anxieties and absurdities of Jewish life in Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century. \nNo prior knowledge of Yiddish literature is required\, just curiosity and a willingness to laugh. Together we’ll unpack Aleichem’s distinctive voice\, his blend of humor and heartbreak\, and why his characters still feel so relevant today.

SUMMARY:A Place in the Tradition: Queerness in Jewish Life
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning presents a three-part exploration with Rabbi Jamie Weisbach of queer Jewish life through Torah\, rabbinic texts\, halakhah\, and Jewish ethics. Sessions examine where queer stories and experiences already live within traditional Jewish texts\, how to approach Leviticus 18:22 and the challenge of halakhah when Jewish law and lived reality appear at odds\, and what Jewish interpersonal ethics ask of us in our relationships with queer family\, friends\, and community members. The course invites participants to encounter challenging texts honestly and consider how Torah can inform the communities we build together.

SUMMARY:Yiddish Poetry and Jewish Identity in 1930s America
DESCRIPTION:The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a discussion with Itay Zutra on his new book “Introspectivism: Yiddish Poetry and Jewish Identity in 1930s America\,” which studies the poetry written in New York by the In Zikh\, also known as the Introspectivists or Inzikhistn. The book explores how the worsening conditions of European Jews and the rise of totalitarianism in the early 1930s pushed the poets to address the theme of cultural heritage and reconnect with their Jewish roots\, carving out room for Yiddish-speaking American Jewish identity. The discussion is moderated by Justin Cammy.

SUMMARY:Model or Mirror? Lessons from the 'Golden Age' of Sephardic History
DESCRIPTION:The Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies hosts an online session exploring the rich and complex world of Sephardic Jewish life in medieval Spain\, home to philosophers\, poets\, and courtiers such as Maimonides\, Judah Halevi\, and Isaac Abravanel\, and later to the devastation of the Spanish Inquisition and the 1492 Expulsion. The talk examines the diverse composition of Jewish communities and how Jews navigated their relationships with Muslim and Christian neighbors. It offers a fresh look at the era often called the “Golden Age” of Jewish civilization and what this history might teach about Jewish community\, identity\, and life today.
