At its peak, Jews constituted nearly 30% of the city’s population and shaped its culture, economy, and politics, spanning religious reform and traditionalist orthodoxy, the richest financiers and poorest shop workers, and the base for both political radicalism and resurgent conservatism. The talk travels from the 17th century to the 21st, and from the tenements of the Lower East Side to leafy Riverdale.
