The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Vantage Point on Judaism in Antiquity

The Community Scholar Program presents a series on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the unexpected finding between 1947 and 1956 that shed new light on Jewish history in antiquity. The unknown Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts, written on parchment, are part of a priestly sacred library of authors who described themselves as “The priests the sons of Zadok and their allies.” The series discusses the fourfold nature of the unknown books, the background and purpose of their authors, the bitter dispute on the priestly calendar in the last two centuries BCE, and the scrolls’ connection to the ongoing conflict between the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
