The Book of Jonah: Philosophy, Transformation and Human Freedom
Hosted By: My Jewish Learning
4 Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. ET
Sept. 10 – Oct. 1
All classes will be recorded and sent to registrants.
Beyond the story of a reluctant prophet and a great whale, the Book of Jonah is one of the Hebrew Bible’s most profound explorations of human freedom.
Just in time for Yom Kippur — when the book is traditionally read — join My Jewish Learning’s exploration of the book with the help of scholar Marina Zilbergerts, who teaches at the University of Ottawa.
Through a close reading of the biblical text alongside other reflections on freedom and determinism, you’ll dive into the enduring philosophical questions at the heart of this remarkable book.
Why does Jonah flee from God? And why does the book end without resolving its central question? Together, we will discover what Jonah teaches about human nature, divine mercy, and faith in the human capacity for freedom.
Can’t make one of the live classes? No problem! All registrants will get recordings of class that won’t expire.
