The Bene-Israel of India: An Ancient Living Community

Hosted By: Qesher

The Bene-Israel, the largest historical Jewish community from the Indian subcontinent, traces its origins to the first or second century BCE, according to oral tradition. This event will explore their history, culture, and contributions to Indian and Pakistani history, British colonial rule, and the Bollywood film industry. Today, fewer than 4,000 remain in India, as most have immigrated to Israel, embracing their motto, “Mother India, Father Israel.”

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
