The Afterlife of Yiddish in German-Jewish Culture, 1818–1938

Hosted By: YIVO

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a discussion of “A Lingering Legacy: The Afterlife of Yiddish in German-Jewish Culture, 1818–1938,” which examines how Old Yiddish literature continued to influence modern German-Jewish writers. The talk explores how these texts were retold, translated and debated as German Jews navigated questions of tradition, secularization, emancipation and antisemitism. The program considers how engagement with Yiddish heritage helped shape modern German-Jewish cultural identity.
