SUMMARY:Why Teaching Jewish Texts Is Not Enough
DESCRIPTION:The Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University examines the assumption that Jewish education is centered primarily on textual study\, often called “learning Torah.” This session considers historical perspectives on Jewish textuality and culture to question that narrow focus and propose a broader understanding of Jewish education. The discussion explores how Jewish education can engage young people with a wide range of Jewish cultural practices and forms of participation.

SUMMARY:What Animals Teach Us about Families: Kinship and Species in the Bible and Rabbinic Literature
DESCRIPTION:Valley Beit Midrash explores family separation through an unexpected lens: the impact of human agriculture and development on animal families. Focusing on animal intimate lives rather than dietary ethics\, the session reads the Bible’s four “animal family” laws alongside rabbinic interpretations to examine how humans have understood bonds between animals and between humans and animals. Through this study\, the talk reimagines family itself\, expanding kinship to include other forms of life amid the realities of the Anthropocene.

SUMMARY:Retracing Jewish Heritage in the Bronx
DESCRIPTION:Qesher presents photographer Julian Voloj’s exploration of New York’s diverse Jewish communities and the abandoned synagogues he discovered after moving to the city in 2004. Struck by how quickly neighborhoods like Harlem\, the South Bronx\, and Brownsville were losing visible traces of Jewish life\, he began documenting buildings as they deteriorated or were repurposed. His black-and-white photographs evoke memory and history while reflecting on heritage\, loss\, and cultural reinvention.

SUMMARY:'Among Neighbors' Film Screening with Director Q and A
DESCRIPTION:Watch the powerful Holocaust legacy film in our exclusive online screening and hear from its award-winning director Yoav Potash.\n\n\n\n\nIn the small town of Gniewoszów\, Poland\, all signs of its once-vibrant Jewish life have vanished — even the tombstones from the destroyed cemetery were stolen\, erasing nearly every trace. \nIn the acclaimed documentary “Among Neighbors\,” the town’s oldest residents\, now in the twilight of their lives\, break decades of silence\, sharing secrets they have carried for a lifetime. The result is an evocative and heart-pounding murder mystery with urgent political relevance. The film has won the Audience Award at San Francisco Indiefest\, the Special Award at the Warsaw Jewish Film Festival\, and numerous other awards. \nDecades after the Holocaust\, award-winning filmmaker Yoav Potash unearths the haunting mysteries of this town\, revealing the complex interplay of love and hatred that shaped the lives of local Poles and their Jewish neighbors.

SUMMARY:Hannah and Jewish Man Reading: Painting Nostalgia in 19th Century Europe
DESCRIPTION:This Community Scholar Program talk brings together two compelling paintings\, Hannah and Jewish Man Reading\, displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. These “very Jewish” works were created by artists who found success in secular society through other subjects\, yet were sometimes drawn to traditional Jewish scenes and figures. The session explores how depictions of Jewish life fit into their broader careers and what they reveal about the journeys of Jewish artists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
