Stories from Jewish Barbados, the Pearl of the Caribbean

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher will host a tour of Jewish Barbados, featuring the restored Nidhe Israel Synagogue (1654), adjacent cemeteries, and the recently discovered Mikveh. The tour will explore how Sephardic Jews fleeing the Portuguese Inquisition in Brazil established a community in Barbados under the protection of Oliver Cromwell, contributing significantly to the British sugar industry. The presentation will also cover the decline of this early community, the emigration of Jews from the island, and the formation of today’s Ashkenazi community.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
