Stolen Moments: Jewish Themes and Cultural Allyship in African American Art

Hosted By: Haberman Institute

The Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies hosts Dr. LaNitra Berger on her book “Stolen Moments: Jewish Themes and Cultural Allyship in African American Art,” the first book-length study of cultural allyship focused on Jewish themes in Black art. Berger argues that Black American artists’ contributions to the Black-Jewish relationship are robust but often misinterpreted, forgotten, or suppressed, and that their own experiences with racism and oppression have uniquely positioned them to engage with Jewish themes. The book centers the work of five influential Black American artists from the late 19th century to the present who have found strong connections between Black and Jewish identity.
