Shlomo Dov Goitein: A German-Jewish Historian and Cairo Geniza Scholar
Hosted By: The National Library of Israel (NLI)
Shlomo Dov Goitein, one of the 20th century’s leading Orientalists and Medievalists, was born in southern Germany and came to the Land of Israel on the same boat as Gershom Scholem in 1923, not intending to pursue a life in academia.
And yet over the course of more than half a century, Goitein proved to be a remarkably prolific and versatile scholar – first in British Mandatory Palestine, which became the State of Israel, and later in the United States.
His impressively diverse range of scholarly expertise and pioneering research included: early Islamic history and theology, Arab-Jewish literature, Medieval Jewish history, the history and culture of Yemenite Jewry, and the Cairo Geniza.
The Shlomo Dov Goitein Archive at the National Library of Israel contains some 30 boxes of his personal papers, including correspondence, manuscripts, notes, private diaries, travel literature and ethnographic reports.
Join us for a glimpse into the life and work of this remarkable scholar.
This session will take place at 8 p.m. Israel Time/ 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
