Shavuot Service and Tikkun Leil Shavuot with Stephen Wise Free Synagogue

Hosted By: Stephen Wise Free Synagogue

On Shavuot, we celebrate the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai with special readings and late-night study. Join our clergy for this special virtual service and followed by music and back-to-back teachings about the holiday, mystic traditions and more.

To participate in our Tikkun Leil Shavuot, you must register.

Schedule:

7:00-7:30 PM Erev Shavuot Service: Join our clergy for a short service featuring special readings of piyyutim and from the Book of Ruth as we welcome Shavuot.

7:30-7:45 PM Shavuot Sing-Along with Canto Dan Singer: Sing-along with Cantor Dan Singer as he introduces soft and stormy melodies that express the unburdened ways of the righteous and the turbulent remorsefulness of the repentant.

7:45-8:00 PM Do First, Understand Later with Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch: The Jewish concept of nasseh v’nishmah (“do first, understand later”) is an ancient idea where Jews do the mitzvot first — and then study them. Join Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch as he explores this idea and what it means for modern Reform Jews.

8:00-8:15 PM Black Fire, White Fire with Rabbi Sam Natov: The Torah is central to Judaism, and the way we portray it communicates different ideas and concepts. Join Rabbi Sam Natov as she explores the imagery our tradition uses to describe the Torah — from the tree of life to “black fire on white fire.”

8:15-8:30 PM A Mystical Marriage with Rabbi Shira Gluck: Jewish tradition views Shavuot as a mystical marriage between God and Israel. Join Rabbi Shira Gluck as she examines this symbolic relationship and Torah’s role.

8:30-8:45 PM Comic Break: Balaam and Balak with Rabbi Rena Rifkin: A soothsayer, a king and a talking donkey walk into a bar. Learn about one of the Bible’s funniest and lesser-known stories!

8:45-9:00 PM From Generation to Generation with Student Cantor Joe Flaxman: On Shavuot we celebrate receiving the Torah — a weighty gift — on Mount Sinai and prepare to pass it on, l’dor vador, from generation to generation. Join Student Cantor Joe Flaxman as he explores this fundamental joy through text and song.
