Ruth Rubin and the Study of Yiddish Folksong Today
Hosted By: YIVO
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a program marking what would have been renowned folklorist and singer Ruth Rubin’s 120th birthday, honoring her work preserving over 2,000 Ashkenazi Yiddish folksongs gathered between 1946 and 1970. The session features presentations of new scholarship drawing on Rubin’s work by Isabel Frey (“The Singers Behind the Songs: Hidden Biographies in the Ruth Rubin Archive of Yiddish Folksongs”) and Miriam Borden (“Singing and Sometimes Shouting: Lullabies from the Ruth Rubin Collection”). A discussion moderated by Mark Slobin follows.
