Refugees From World War II: Reclaiming the Music of Polish Composers

Presented by the American Society for Jewish Music, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, Holocaust Music Lost & Found, and the Polish Chamber Musicians’ Association, this program features Jewish-themed works by Szymon Laks, Mieczysław Weinberg, and Roman Ryterband. All three composers were arrested or forced to flee Poland after the German bombing of Warsaw on September 1, 1939, which destroyed the Philharmonic Hall and much of the city. Their music is performed by members of the Polish Chamber Musicians’ Association, joined by American clarinetist Alan R. Kay, reclaiming a body of work created in exile and survival.
