Qesher Book Club: Partly Strong, Partly Broken

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher presents a session on “Partly Strong, Partly Broken,” a contemporary American novel about how political and global conflicts fracture a local community, set in a suburban New Jersey interfaith neighborhood in fall 2023. The novel follows Rabbi Adinah as she returns from Haifa to find her synagogue damaged by a hurricane and her congregation increasingly divided in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel and the devastation in Gaza, while a young Syrian refugee she mentors lies in a coma after a hate crime. The novel explores identity, faith, and moral conflict, asking what it means to be a Jew in America today and how people respond when deeply held values collide.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
