Qesher Book Club: ‘Brooklyn Odyssey: My Journey out of Hasidism’

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher presents a conversation with Zalman Newfield about his memoir “Brooklyn Odyssey: My Journey out of Hasidism,” which recounts his upbringing in the Chabad-Lubavitch community of Crown Heights and his eventual departure from the faith of his youth. Trained as a Lubavitch emissary who traveled the world doing Jewish outreach, Newfield describes how reading, travel, and education gave him new perspective and led him to assert his individuality. The memoir moves through moments of devastation and joyful resolve while reflecting his enduring bond with his family and Jewish tradition.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
